Salute To Veterans

Step back in military history at the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village!
Saturday's visitors will enjoy demonstrators and re-enactors representing the Civil War along with displays of military memorabilia. Some presenters on site will be Andrew Shores, Gene Pennell, Nora Brooks, Deacon Jones, Jim Williams, John Ellis, Steve Shaw, Jack Clay, Mike McRae, Paul Troutman, Henry LeGrande, camplife re-enactors, and more. The Boy Scouts of Blair Road United Methodist Church will provide a reverent flag raising and flag retirement ceremony. A Vietnam era helicopter will be on display along with an experienced pilot to tell all about it. "A Hero's Story" is being told in the Ashcraft Schoolhouse. Three well-spoken veterans with strong voices from WWII will tell share their fascinating experiences. Henry Grathwohl is witness to the Pearl Harbor bombing Dec. 7, 1941. Herb Cooper was radioman on a plane that ditched over Berlin, he was arrested on the ground by German civilian police becoming a POW from July 1944-April 1945 - marched 700 miles across Poland and was liberated by British Army. Tom Easterling is another speaker who was a pilot shot down over Germany and spent 6 months as a POW and author of "Furrows in the Clouds".
